An abnormal noise occurs on your electric scooter? Although often very disturbing, the noises of an electromechanical device are in fact generally normal. Indeed, a machine rolling in an external environment is subjected to shocks and resistance causing the components to move. The appearance of noises is then almost obligatory as the uses progress. But fortunately, there are solutions to make them disappear again. Also note that in more rare cases, the noises that appear may come from a larger mechanical or electrical malfunction. In this case, electronic skills will be necessary to solve the problem.

Why is your electric scooter making noise?

In the majority of cases, it is normal for your electric scooter to make noise. Like any motorized electrical device, its components emit sounds when they operate, and in particular the engine. So, during use, if you notice a slight hiss coming from the motor (often it is located in the front wheel of scooters), it is completely normal since it is simply the noise made by the motor. the engine when it is running. There is also nothing to worry about if this noise gets louder when you accelerate since the engine is running faster and therefore the sound is louder.

On the other hand, if the noise seems jerky, jammed, that it is much louder than usual or that it seems to rub, there may be a problem with the motor. In this case further inspection will be necessary.

Other components may also make noise on your electric scooter: wheels, stem or brakes. Although usually not a big deal, they are not always normal and therefore require inspection. This especially if they appear over time or if they increase. If you notice abnormal noises from these elements, it may come from different factors that you will then have to try to check one by one:

  • if your electric scooter makes noise at the level of its wheels, the problem may be tires that are underinflated, loose, insufficiently lubricated, clogged with debris, or worn.
  • if your electric scooter makes noise at the stem, generally it is a question of a bad adjustment of this one. But it can also come from the deterioration or the disappearance of the lubrication of the components, from loosening of the nuts and/or screws, or from certain parts which become loose over time.
  • if your electric scooter makes brake noise, it is probably incorrectly adjusted or damaged.

What to do when your electric scooter makes an abnormal noise?

When your electric scooter makes a strange and abnormal noise, it will be necessary to try toidentify its origin to avoid the risk of accident or irreversible damage to the machine. Depending on where the noise is coming from (brake, stem, wheels, motor), the checks and solutions to solve the problem will obviously not be identical. We invite you to go directly to the part that concerns you.

Electric scooter making noise, what to do?

Important:
– If your electric scooter still has the right to guarantee (2 years from the manufacturer in France), we recommend that you immediately contact the after-sales service of the retailer or the manufacturer so that an approved technician can solve the problem. Indeed, if the manipulations lead to breakage, the customer service can reserve the right to cancel the guarantee.
– Also note that each electric scooter has very specific characteristics and manipulations may not match your model. If in doubt about a procedure, we advise you to call a professional to avoid irreversible damage to your electric scooter.
- Warning to electrical shock. Always turn off and unplug the power to your scooter before performing any operation.

Solve the noise that comes from the wheels of the electric scooter

When your scooter makes a noise coming from the wheels, they may not be sufficiently inflated. The more the wheels are deflated, the greater the resistance, and the more noise they will make. Then check the tire pressure and adjust if necessary. Don't forget to check regularly because driving with under-inflated tires damages them much more quickly.

Take the opportunity to check their condition. If you find that many débris are snagged on one or both wheels, clean them. Also check the wheel bearings. If they are Sales, clean them with a slightly damp cloth.

Once the bearings are clean, add WD40 PTFE to lubricate them. Indeed, it is possible that the wheels of your electric scooter make clicking or squeaking noises because its axles are not sufficiently oiled and this therefore causes metallic friction. This manipulation does not require any dismantling of the scooter. You just need to put product on each side of the bearings. However, be careful not to put any on the brake, which could be dangerous because the braking would lose effectiveness!

If the noise persists after lubricating the bearings, also check that the screw that hold the wheels have not come loose. Note that you should not force too much either. A quarter turn is usually sufficient to tighten screws.

Also check that the mudguard does not rub or does not bounce on the wheel. If so, it needs to be tightened.

Finally, if you find that components are rubbing together or the wheels seem too worn, you probably need them. replace.

Adjust the noise coming from the brakes

There are different types of brakes on electric scooters. Generally, these are the drum brakes and disc brakes which must be adjusted and maintained regularly.

If you find thata noise appears on your electric scooter when you brake, it may be that pads or jaws are incorrectly adjusted or excessively worn if you have been using the machine for a long time. First check that the pads or shoes are not rubbing against the brake discs or brake drums. Also check that they are well adjusted and that they have not taken any play. If this is the case, they will have to be realigned or readjusted. Finally, make sure they are not too worn otherwise they will certainly have to be replaced.

If you do not have the skills to do this, we advise you to contact a professional who can correctly adjust your brakes, without taking any risk for your safety.

Solve the noise that comes from the stem of the electric scooter

When the stem of your scooter makes an abnormal or amplified noise during use, the problem is most likely mechanical. It will then be necessary to lubricate the various components of the stem, tighten the screws and nuts, adjust the lock of the scooter and/or try to reduce the handlebar play. Fix engine noise

Si the noise of your electric scooter comes from the motor, it may be that a connector is disconnected or damaged, wherever he is defective.

You will then need to open your electric scooter to access the control board which is directly connected to the motor. It is usually located next to the battery, in the footrest. Remember to turn off the scooter and turn it off.

Warning: Opening the scooter voids the warranty. If your machine is still eligible, do not carry out the manipulations and contact the manufacturer's after-sales service.

Once the electric scooter is open, check that no wires have become disconnected on the control board. Indeed, it is possible that with shocks and vibrations, one of them ends up disconnecting on its own. Then push all the wires into their respective connectors. Then check that no wires or components on the control board appear damaged, melted or burned. If so, it will need to be replaced. If a component is damaged on the control board, it will certainly have to be replaced in its entirety.

Tighten screws, lubricate axles and inspect components

Finally, if the noise is coming from a place other than those stated above, check that screws are tight and if it is a particular axis that is making noise, try lubricate it with WD40 PTFE. Please note that the brakes must not be lubricated.

If you noise comes from the footrest of your electric scooter, you can open it and check that all the screws that hold the components (battery and control board) are tight. Check that no component is rubbing on another component. Be careful, once again opening your machine voids the warranty.

Contact a professional

When your electric scooter continues to make noise, you cannot determine where it is coming from or you are not competent to handle it, we advise you to call a professional. professional. Indeed, it is also possible that the noise comes from a mechanical or electrical breakdown which requires advanced electrical clearances. The scooters having different designs and characteristics from each other, it is not possible at this stage to detail the manipulations.

If your electric scooter is still under warranty, contact the after-sales service of the retailer or manufacturer. You will then be entitled to a free repair. Otherwise, we advise you to first contact the manufacturer's after-sales service to obtain more in-depth information on the noise you are experiencing. Then, to request an estimate of the price of the repair from the after-sales service and from an independent professional repairer to make an informed choice.
