So, find out in this article what to do when your printer no longer works after you have changed your internet box?

I changed boxes and my printer no longer works, what should I do?

Reconnect your printer to the network of the internet box

For most routers and printers, the connection between the two devices is simple and rather intuitive. However, we invite you to consult the user manual of your box and your printer model to have the exact procedure. If you no longer have it in CD or paper format, you can find it on the manufacturer's website.

Often, the connection between a printer and the wifi network or Ethernet network of the box is simply done this way (approach for printer having a screen:

  1. Turn on the printer and make sure it has wifi function. If this is not the case, you will need to connect the printer to the box either with a USB 2.0 cable or with an Ethernet cable. (Note that some printers must have paper in the paper tray in order to be configured.)
  2. Check that the box is powered on, and that its wifi function (if it has one) is activated and functional.
  3. On your printer screen, go to Configuration -> Network Setup -> Network Setup Wizard ou Connect the printer to the network. Launch the setup and follow the instructions.
  4. The printer will probably ask you to press the button WPS from the box. It is usually found on the back of the modem.
  5. The installation and connection to the network of your box will then start automatically. You will definitely need enter the wifi code of the new box.
  6. In principle, the drivers will then automatically install themselves on your PC when you turn it on or when you ask to print. If this is not the case, and your printer is not recognized by the PC, insert the installation CD supplied with your printer into your PC drive or download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
  7. Follow the installation instructions that launch (selection of the wifi or Ethernet network, indication of the name of the network and the security key).

If the wifi connection did not work, then try connecting the printer via Ethernet during the installation and configuration of the printer. Then, if it still doesn't work, try using a USB 2.0 cable.

If your printer, which no longer works after changing the box, does not have a screen, make the connection on your PC by proceeding as follows:

  1. Turn on the printer and the box and connect the printer to the box via a USB 2.0 or Ethernet cable.
  2. Turn on the PC and connect it to the wifi network.
  3. In principle, when you connect the printer to the box, which itself is connected to the PC, the printer drivers install automatically. If this is not the case, and your printer is not recognised, insert the installation CD supplied with your printer into your PC drive or download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
  4. Follow the installation instructions that launch (selection of the wifi or Ethernet network, indication of the name of the network and the security key).

If the internet connection did not work at all, try connect the printer directly to the PC via a USB cable and repeat the driver installation procedure.

If nothing helps and your printer no longer connects after changing box, then additional manipulations will be necessary.

I changed boxes and my printer does not work even after reconnecting it, what should I do?

Note that depending on the printer, the box and the operating system, the procedures described in this article may differ. Here we present the most common standard solutions. However, if you are unable to perform a manipulation, it may not be possible due to an element of your configuration. In this case, proceed to the next step.

Before embarking on further checks and manipulations, first check that you have paper in the paper block, enough ink and that at the time of printing you have selected the good printer.

Change the wifi code of the printer that no longer works

When you change boxes, you also change your password. A fairly common mistake is then to try to reconnect the printer to the network of the new box without having changed the password. Indeed, for all printers that connect via wifi, you must configure the password in the printer. This is a security measure to prevent any printer from connecting to your box.

Then try to modify the wifi security code of the new box in the printer settings. You will find the procedure to follow in the user manual corresponding to the printer model you have. If you no longer have the manual (it can be found in PDF format on the printer's installation CD), you can, in principle, find it on the manufacturer's website. If you can't find it, then contact your printer manufacturer's support.

Restart devices

Secondly, when your printer no longer works after changing the internet box, try restart all your devices. To do this, turn off all your devices (PC, printer, box), disconnect them from their power supply for 2 minutes, reconnect them and restart them. Then run the installation setup again. This sometimes fixes small bugs that may prevent the connection between the printer and the router.

Install the printer on the computer and network

If your computer or other mobile devices do not detect the printer after switching boxes, then you may need to install it manually.

In principle, the printer drivers are installed automatically when you connect it to the wifi network or to the PC, and then you can immediately use the printer. However, sometimes you will need toadd the print driver or printer software (computer) or a application (phone, tablet) of your printer to configure it or connect it to your devices. In this case, this should be indicated to you on the paper user manual or on the printer manufacturer's website.

If the printer is not detected at all by your mobile devices or computers connected to the same network, then manually add it to the network. For that :

  1. In the menu Start, go to Control panel
  2. In Hardware and audio, go in Peripherals and Printers
  3. Click on Add a printer
  4. The setup wizard on your PC will automatically search for the printer. If its name appears, select it, click on Next, And then Completed.
  5. If your PC cannot find the printer, click Add Printer Using TCP/IP Address or Host Name
  6. Entrez the printer's IP address and port name and validate. The installation starts automatically.

For find your printer's IP address : type 192.168.1.1 in your search bar. You arrive on the interface of your box. Click on "My connected devices“, click the name of your printer. In the window that opens you will find the IP address and the port name.

Change the wifi encryption mode of the box

In order to connect your printer to your new box, it may also be necessary to change your router's security mode. Indeed, there are several levels of internet connection protection: WEP, WPA, WPA2. Try switching to WEP and then testing the other modes if that doesn't work. To change the protection mode, you must connect to the user interface of your box. If you cannot find the manipulation to achieve this in your user manual or on the internet, contact your internet service provider.

If your printer still does not work after changing the box and the security key, then try to temporarily disable the firewall. Then try printing again. If it works, you can re-enable the firewall and add your printer in the permission settings.

Reinstall the printer software

It is also possible that your printer no longer works simply because of a bug in the application or the software of the latter. First try to run a device maintenance from the application or from the printer screen. If nothing helps and your printer still does not work, then try remove the installed software or application, then reinstall.

Reset the printer that no longer works with your box

If nothing helps and your printer still does not work after changing the box, you can try to reset printer. This allows you to reset the printer settings, and thus eliminate any connection conflicts between the box and the printer. If a reset procedure exists for your printer, once again you will find it on the user guide.

Contact support

In case after all these checks and manipulations your printer still does not work with the new box, contact the support of your internet provider. They will be able to guide you in a personalized way according to your configuration.
